If the Ksp of sodium chloride is 37.93, how many grams of sodium chloride will dissolve in 10,000. gallons of pure water? How many grams of silver iodide will dissolve in 10,000. gallons of pure water, if its Ksp = 1.2 x 10-16? How many grams of Ag2CO3 will dissolve in 10,000. gallons of pure water, if the Ksp = 8.1 x 10-12?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1)

Ksp of NaCl = 37.93

NaCl   ---------------> Na+ + Cl-

Ksp = [Na+][Cl-]

37.93 = S^2

S = 6.16 M

molar solubility = 6.16 M

volume of water = 10,000 gal = 37854.12 L

molarity = moles / volume

6.16 = moles / 37854.12

moles of NaCl = 233133.4 mol

mass of NaCl = 1.36 x 10^7 g

2)

AgI Ksp = 1.2 x 10^-16

1.2 x 10^-16 = S^2

S = 1.095 x 10^-8 M

Molarity = moles / volume

1.095 x 10^-8 = moles / 37854.12

moles of AgI = 4.15 x 10^-4 mol

mass of AgI = 0.0974 g

3)

mass of Ag2CO3 = 1.32 x 10^3 g
