In each pair, choose the compound expected to have the higher boiling point:
A) C3H8 or C5H12
B) C3H8O or C2H6O
C) C3H8O or C3H8
Please explain why. I would upload the picture but I'm not able too.
Highest boiling point,
A) As the molecular weight of the hydrocarbon goes up, intermolecular force of attraction also increases. Thus would show greater boiling point.
Thus here C5H12 has higher boiling point.
B) Once again the boiling point increases in case of alcohol or ether with increasing chain length. Alcohols would have higher boiling point due to hydrogen bonding as compared to ether.
Thus here, C3H8O has higher boiling point
C) Placing an oxygen increases ability to form strong hydrogen bonding between the molecules which increases the boiling point as compared to pure hydrocarbon.
Thus here C3H8O has higher boiling point
