Write equations depicting the 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd ionization energy of magnesium. How would the 3 rd ionization e nergy compare to the other two?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Mg   -------------> Mg+ + e-           1st ionization energy

Mg+ -------------> Mg2+ + e-         2nd ionization energy

Mg2+ -------------> Mg3+ + e-        3rd ionization energy

3rd IE > 1st and 2nd

Because, Mg2+ has electronic configuration of noble gas i.e 1s2 2s2 2p6.

Hence,

more energy is required to remove an electron from Mg2+.

Therefore,

3 rd ionization energy is greater than 1st and 2nd.
