Mass spectroscopy is a powerful tool in the world of structure identification. Elaborate on why it is so powerful; is there any drawback to high resolution mass spec? If so, what?
Mass spectrometry is a microanalytical techniqye requiring only a few nanomoles of the sample to obtain characteristics inforormation pertaining to structures and molecular weight of analyte. It is unlike the other form of spectroscopy, in that it is not concerned with non destructive interaction between molecule and electromagnetic radiations. Instead it involves the production and sepration of ionized molecule and their ionic decomposition product and finally their measurements of ions produced. It is thus destructive technique in that the sample is consumed during analaysis.
