Hydrochloric acid is a strong inorganic acid; it ionizes completely in water and almost completely in other polar solvent giving a naked proton and Chloride ion.

Hence the reagent which has strong affinity for proton cannot be stored with hydrochloric acid. Some examples are

  1. Grignard reagents i.e. organomagnesium compounds (R-Mg-X). G.R. reacts violently with HCl (or any other proton source) and forms corresponding hydrocarbon (R-H). Other organometallics also)
  2. Potassium cyanide (KCN) on reaction with proton source forms HCN hydrogen cyanide- a poisonous gas.
  3. Lithium aluminium hydride (LiAlH4) a strong reducing reagent also reacts proton source violently with hydrogen gas evolution.
  4. Enzymes get denatured (Change in configuration of protein or co-factor in the enzymes) in presence of protons i.e. acidic solutions
