What type of spectroscopic evidence would allow a distinction to be made between ketones or aldehydes and other functional groups that might give a positive 2,4-DNP test?
Difference between ketone and aldehyde can be easily made by the use of NMR and IR techniques ass both have positive 2,4-DNP test.
In 1HNMR, aldehyde will shoe a peak at 9-10 ppm for proton of aldehyde H (ie. CHO) which is totally absent for ketones.
In IR analysis, stretching for aldehyde carbonyl (C=O) appears at 1725 cm-1 whereas for ketone at 1700-1715 cm-1. Additionaly for aldehyde there are two sharp peaks at 2700-2850 cm-1 for C-H stretching of aldehyde CHO.
