Would reactions using silver nitrate in ethanol give the same results if you had used sodium nitrate in ethanol instead? What, if anything, would have been different?
To find out the solution, first check the solubility of silver nitrate and sodium nitrate in ethanol. In case of silver nitrate, 100mL of ethanol dissolves 3.1 g of silver nitrate at 19 oC whereas 100 mL ethanol dissolves only 0.8g of sodium nitrate. Hence, the solubility of sodium nitrate is less. This leads a different concentration of ions present in the ethanol solution form both the sources when equimolar amounts of both are used. Hence, the result of reaction would be different in both cases not same.
