If an activity series for three metals is determined to be Mg > Al > Zn, then predict whether or not the following reactions will occur.

a. Mg + Zn(NO3)2 →

b. Al + Zn(NO3)2 →

c. Al + Mg(NO3)2 →

d. Zn + Mg(NO3)2 →

Answer #1

Answer – We are given the activity series for three metals is determined to be Mg > Al > Zn and from that we confirmed that Mg can oxidized from the both Al and Zn. Al can have oxidized by Zn and Zn not getting oxidized by Mg and Al. The Al also not oxidize by Mg.

a) In this reaction there will be Mg is oxidized, so this reaction will occur.

Mg + Zn(NO3)2 -----> will occur

b)In this reaction Al will be oxidized, so this reaction will occur.

Al + Zn(NO3)2 -----> will occur

c) In this reaction Al gets oxidized by Mg, so this reaction will not occur.

Al + Mg(NO3)2 ----> Not occur

d) In this reaction Zn will be oxidized, so so this reaction will not occur.

Zn + Mg(NO3)2 -----> Not occur

rank Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Sn, and Zn in terms of increasing reactivity. rank most (if not all) of the metals by simply comparing the reactions that occurred when each metal was added to HCl Clearly, those metals that reacted with HCl to produce hydrogen gas would be considered more active that those that exhibited no reaction. In addition, the metal that reacted the most vigorously in acid would be the most reactive metal. By continuing this line of reasoning...
