Vinaigrette salad dressing consists mainly of oil and vinegar. The density of olive oil is 0.918 g/cm3, the density of vinegar is 1.006 g/cm3, and the two do not mix. If a certain mixture of olive oil and vinegar has a total mass of 400.0 g and a total volume of 425.0 cm3 , what is the volume of oil and what is the volume of vinegar in the mixture? Express your answer using two significant figures.
Solution :-
Lets assume the fraction of mass of the olive oil = x g
Then fraction of mass of vinegar = 1-x g
Total mass is 400 g and volume is 425 cm3
Volume = mass / density
So we can make the following set up
(400*x/0.918)+(400*(1-x)/1.006) =425
435.73x + 397.61 – 397.61 x = 425
38.12x = 27.39
X= 27.39 / 38.12
X= 0.7185
So the volume of olive oil = 425 cm3 * 0.7185 = 305.4 cm3 = 3.0*10^2 cm3 (two sig fig )
Volume of vinegar = 425 cm3 – 305.4 cm3 = 119.6 cm3 = 1.2*10^2 cm3 (two sig fig )
