Answer #1

NOTES:

a strong acid must have a very electornegative pole

the shortest molecule will have a higher polarity density

therefore

CF3CH2COOH --> foog option, 3 carbons, 3F ions

CHF2COOH --> good option, 2 carbons, 2 F

CH2FCOOH --> weaker than previous.

CF2COOH --> can't exist, (excess of electrons)

CHF2CH2COOH -- too long

analysis must be done on

CF3CH2COOH --> foog option, 3 carbons, 3F ions

CHF2COOH --> good option, 2 carbons, 2 F

choose the shortest, since ratio are C:F similar

so

CHF2COOH will be the stronger acid

The strongest known acid is fluoroantimonic acid, [H2F][SbF6]. It is 1016 times more acidic than concentrated sulfuric acid and has a pH of -31.3; it is strong enough to protonate both xenon and molecular hydrogen. It is an ionic liquid made by reacting hydrogen fluoride with antimony(V) fluoride: 2 HF + SbF5 → H2F+ + SbF6- Explain why this acid is so strong.
