How would I write out the reaction that happen when NaOH is added to the 0.5 M solution of hydrochloric acid? Also, the reaction when NaOH is added to the 0.5 solution of phosphoric acid?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

As NaOH is a strong base and HCl is a strong acid ,so when they react with each other neutraization reaction takes places i.e salt and water is formed as a product.

NaOH + HCl---> NaCl + H2O

where NaCl is a salt and H2O is water .

Generally these reactions makes the pH of solution 7.

Similarly when NAOH reacts with phosporic acid(H3PO4) ,then again neutralization reaction takes place as follows

NaOH + H3PO4 ---> NaH2PO4 + H2O

where  NaH2PO4 is a salt

Reaction (i) Pb2+(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq) ⇌ PbCl2(s) If NaOH is added to reaction (i), a second precipitation reaction will occur: Reaction (ii) Pb2+(aq) + 2 OH-(aq) ⇌ Pb(OH)2(s) The important aspect of this is that the two reactions take place within the same container (just because we draw them separately on paper does not mean they are separate inside in the container). Thus, reaction (i) and (ii) are coupled at the molecular level by a common chemical species that...
