4) What would be the effect of each of the following on the equilibrium involving the reaction of coke (C(s)) with steam to give CO(g) and H2(g)? C(s) + H2O(g) ↔ CO(g) + H2(g)

a.) The addition of steam?

b.) An increase in pressure?

c.) The removal of H2 as it is produced?

d.) The addition of a catalyst?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

C(s) + H2O(g) ↔ CO(g) + H2(g)

a) If the concentartion of reactants increase, the equilibrium of the reaction shifts towards right side and viceversa

Therefore, additon of steam shifts the reaction to the right side

b) if pressure of reaction increases, the reaction moves towards the side of least number of moles.

Therefore, the reaction shifts to left side 1mole↔2mole

c) If the number of moles of products decreases, the reaction shifts towards product side

Therfore, if H2 gas is removed, equilibrium shifts towards right side

d) The addition of catalyst does not effect the equilibrium
