For the Electrochemcal Measurement and Batteries an electrochemical cell laboratory.
Involving the balcned reaction: Cu + 2Ag+ => Cu+2 + 2Ag ,

what does this question mean: "what are the components of the references and of the working electrodes?" and, " What is the function of the attached string? How must the string be placed so that it functions properly?"

Answer #1

For the mentioned experiment

We are going to perform electochemical measurement.

The electrode used here is copper and silver electrode these will considered as working electrodes

The electrode used for determination of electrode potential of working electrode is known as reference electrode.

We may use Standard Hydrogen electrode (SHE) made up of platinum .

The wet string used in these kind of experiments is used as salt bridge between two half cells (copper and silver).

So the string should be in contact with both the solution (copper solution and silver solution) such that either end is dipped in the either half cell (both).

It is used to maintain the electroneutrality between two half cells.
