A cat prefers to eat dog food. The cat weighs 5.00 kg and gets 5.00 mg per day of niacin from eating dog food. However, a healthy daily dose of niacin for cats is 7.50 mg niacin/kg of cat. How much liquid niacin supplement, C6H5NO2 in a 0.200 M solution, should Schrodinger’s cat consume daily in order to be healthy?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

From given data, Cat weight = 5Kg

A healthy cat needs 7.5 mg niacin/kg of cat

This cat weighs 5kg so it needs 5*7.5= 37.5mg of niacin supliment

and it is getting 5mg of niacin by eating dogs food.

So remaining 37.5 - 5 = 32.5mg of niacin will be from 0.2M solution

From molarity formula,

M = (w / GMW)1000/V in ml

M = molarity of solution = 0.2M

w = weight of solute = 32.5mg = 0.0325g

GMW = gram molecular weight of niacin = 123

V = volume of 0.2M solution required for 32.5mg of niacin =?

0.2 = (0.0325/123)1000/V

V = 1.3211ml of liquid niacin is required for the cat to be healthy
