I thoroughly inflated a bag of soccer balls last summer. however,
when I brought them out to play this winter, they all were under
inflated . Discuss the possible reasons
Let us remember the ideal gas law
PV=nRT
Pressure of a gas is directly proportional to temperature
The soccer ball has the same volume in winter
But pressure inside the ball decreases due to the low temperatures in the winter.
As the temperature decreases pressure inside the ball decreases so ball is under infltaed.
Why the pressure drops down?
We fill the ball with air which contains moisture (H2O(g)). This moisture get condense inside the ball at low temperature. Total number of collisions between the molecules and the walls decreases. Thus pressure inside the ball get drops down.
