The following reactions worked:

Pb(NO3)2 + KI, BaCl2 + Na2SO4 , NaOH + HCl , and NaHCO3 + HCl.

The following did not work:

HCl + Na2SO4 and KCl + Na2SO4.

Please classify into precipitation, neutralization, or gas-producing.

Why do some work and the others don't?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

pb(NO3)2 + KI ----------> PBI2      + KNO3      precipitation reaction

BaCl2 + Na2SO4 --------------> BaSO4      +   2NaCl        precipitation reaction

NaOH + HCl ------------------> H2O   + naCl    neutralization reaction

NaHCO3 + HCl   ----------------->   NaCl    + H2O   + CO2      gas producing    and neutralization reaction.

reaction between two strong electrolytes are not possible.

reaction between one strong electrolyte and one weak electrolyte are possible.

Acid-Base Behavior In addition to following the general safety rules, chemicals need to be handled properly. In particular, two very important classes of compounds called acids and bases require special attention. These compounds are commonly used reagents in the laboratory; therefore, understanding their proper disposal is beneficial. Physical differences between acids and bases can be detected by the some of the five senses, including taste and touch. Acids have a sour or tart taste and can produce a stinging sensation...
