If these three balloons are all the same size, what angle is formed between the red one and the green one? b) If additional air is added to the blue balloon so that it gets larger, will the angle between the red and green balloon increase, decrease ,or stay the same?(c) Which of the following aspects of the VSEPR model is illustrated by part (b):(i) The electron-domain geometry for four electron domains is tetrahedral.(ii) The electron domains for nonbonding pairs are larger than those for bonding pairs.(iii) The hybridization that corresponds to a trigonal planar electron-domain geometry is sp^2?

Answer #1

a)

The angle between blue, red and green ballons is 120, because the ballons are of same size.

Since there are three angles each angle = 360/3 = 120 deg

b) If the air in the blue ballon is added blue balloon get larger and the angle between the green and red balloon will decrease.

c) Nonbonding pair of electrons or lone pair of electrons exerts more repulsive force on bonding pair of electrons and decrease the bond angle between bonding pair of electrons.

So answer is (ii) The electron domains for nonbonding pairs are larger than those for bonding pairs.
