What is the polarity of these solvents?

1. Meso-1,2-Dibromo-1,2-diphenylethane

2. Racemic-1,2-Dibromo-1,2-diphenylethane

3. Pyridinium Tribromide

4. 30% Sodium Thiosulfate

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In case of meso isomer, the C-Br dipole cancel to each other. So it is non polar.

2. In the racemic mixture, 50% d and 50% l form is present. And hence the polarity of medium becomes zero.

3.

In pyridine tri bromide , due to presence of electronegative N atom, it withdraws electron towards it and creats a dipole. So it is polar.

In thiosulphate, two sulfur atoms are not identical. The oxygen atom withdraws electron towards it and creats a positive charge on sulfur atom. And creats a dipole. So it is polar solvent.
