10. Determine the shape of the central atoms of the following molecule.

N2O3  (ONNO2)

(a) Shape around N(1) (ON):

trigonal pyramidal

bent (V-shaped)

trigonal planar

tetrahedral

(b) Shape around N(2) (NO2):

trigonal bipyramidal

tetrahedral

bent (V-shaped)

trigonal planar

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(a) In the above Lewis structure, left nitrogen atom bonded to two atoms and it has one lone pair. According to VSEPR theory, the geometry around the atom which is bonded two atoms and has one lone pair electrons is bent.

Therefore, the shape around N1 (ON) is bent (V-shaped).

(b) In the above Lewis structure, the fight nitrogen atom bonded to three atoms. According to VSEPR theory, the geometry around the atom which is bonded to three atoms is trigonal planar.

Therefore, the shape around N(2) atom is trigonal planar.
