Can oxidation occur without reduction simultaneously occurring?

explanation of 250 words.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

No, Oxidation occurs because an agent that causes the oxidation called the oxidizing agent itself get reduced.

In oxidation process, electrons are produced and they must be accepted by other species.

For example,

oxidation : Zn(s) -------------> Zn2+(aq) + 2e-

reduction : Cu2+(aq) + 2e- ---------------> Cu(s)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

overall rxn : Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq) --------> Cu(s) + Zn2+(aq)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The quantity of antimony in a sample can be determined by an oxidation-reduction titration with an oxidizing agent. A 9.61-g sample of stibnite, an ore of antimony, is dissolved in hot, concentrated HCl(aq) and passed over a reducing agent so that all the antimony is in the form Sb3 (aq). The Sb3 (aq) is completely oxidized by 42.0 mL of a 0.130 M aqueous solution of KBrO3(aq). The unbalanced equation for the reaction is BrO3(aq) + Sb3+(aq) -> Br-(aq) +Sb5+(aq)...
