Question

What is the strongest acid of the following? HOCl HOI HOF HOBr

What is the strongest acid of the following?
HOCl
HOI
HOF
HOBr

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Here you go:

The strongest acid among all these is HOCl and the weakest is the HOF since the protons in HOF are not free sonce they are bound in a condensed structure with other HOF molecules through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. And in the case of HOCl, HOBr and HOI, due to the highest electronegativity of Cl, it pulls of all the electron density from the O-H bond and makes easy release of the proton and thus it is the strongest among these all!!

I hope it helps!!!
