A waste water sample is reported to have significant amount of Cr3+ and Pb2+ . propose a method /plan to determine the concentration of these ions using EDTA titration and other common chemicals
EDTA is a hexadentate ligand and hence can form stable complexes with many heavy metal ions.
Pb+2 and Cr+3 can be easily determined in water samples by a complexometric titration with EDTA. I will discuss here the one with chromium
EDTA, acetic acid and sodium acetate are added in the water sample. Formation of violet Cr(III) -EDTA chelate is completed after heating on a steam bath for 15 minutes amd the excess of EDTA is titrated with lead nitrate solution in the presence of potassium chromate. The end point is indicated by precipitation of lead chromate.
