Write aqueous dissolutions reactions for NaCl, KCl, and CaCl2.
Using these aqueous dissolutions, write new reactions that include HEAT as a reactant or product for NaCl, KCl, and CaCl2.
Which salt would work best to make a heat pack? Why?
1)
NaCl(s) --> Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
KCl(s) --> K+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
CaCl2(s) --> Ca2+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq)
2)
NaCl(s) + HEAT --> Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
KCl(s) + HEAT --> K+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
CaCl2(s) + HEAT --> Ca2+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq)
3) CaCl2 salt would work best to make a heat pack, since it is more soluble at low temperature, below 30 oC it has maximum solubility in water. Hence it will be best hot pack or heat pack. Please see below solubility curve graph for better understanding.
