You should have noticed the difference between H2salpn ligand you made last week and H2salen ligand you made this week. Why H2salen precipitate from the alcohol solution, while H2salpn does not?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

H2salen precipitate from the alcohol solution, since it has -OH groups facing each other internally in the molecule and the entire hydrophobic organic moiety is facing the external side and the internally oriented hnydrophilic -OH groups are involved in intramolecular H bonding and does not encourage H bond formation with alcohol unlike H2salpn in which the OH gropus are arranged facing the exterior of the molecule and this hydrophilicity of the outer surface makes it soluble in alcohol through H bond formation.

I have noticed that in many exercises when there is a difference between book value and fair market value , we calculate the percentage of discount at first in order to calculate the depreciation expenses For example, let's think about a company which buys an asset from other company The book value of machine is 30.000 USD The fair value (after financial expert statement) is 35.000USD How can we calculate the depreciation expenses for 10 years (we assume salvage value...

In the circuit you built last week, you unfortunately made it so the solder (composition 90wt% Pb, 10% Sn) acts as a loadbearing support. Your entire buzzer system has a mass of 15 kg. Given that the lead-tin solder has a tensile strength of 52.5 MPa, an average solder size of 1 mm in diameter, and 3 solder junctions that have a load upon them, will your device fail?

You are the duty manager of the only cinema in town and have noticed that you get more customers from Thursday through to Sunday nights than for you do on Monday through Wednesday. You are also studying Business at university so you decide to investigate further and have determined that each period can be represented by two different markets demand curves. The busier weekends seem to follow an inverse demand curve of P = 10−0.001Q, while the weekdays it is...

Last week we looked at the properties of the normal distribution and have found that it is the basis for much of inferential statistics. But not all data follows that normal distribution. Are we in trouble? No. Enter the Central Limit Theorem (CLT). What is the CLT? Why does it make the use of the common inferential tools possible even if the raw data is not distributed normally?

For your post-lab questions: some of you made red-colored Co(salen), while others made brown-colored Co(salen). The difference is due to different amount of O2 incorporated into the reaction to make (salen)Co-O-O-Co(salen). The red compound has less O2 and usually forms when the temperature is higher. (1) Why you did not see the same phenomenon last week for the synthesis of Ni(salen)? (2) Why higher temperatures favor the product with less O2 incorporated? (3) Assuming you made pure (salen)Co-O-O-Co(salen), how would...

This week, we learn about mixtures and solutions. How many times have you put (or seen someone else put) sugar into iced tea and seen the sugar sink to the bottom? Contrast this approach to making Sweet Tea – where tea is heated up, sugar is dissolved while hot, and then allowed to cool. In Sweet Tea, the sugar stays in solution instead of falling to the bottom. Using your understanding of temperature, mixtures, and solutions, describe why one method...
