Answer #1

oxidation : gaining of O is called oxidation

loosing electrons is oxidation

increasing oxidation satate is oxidatiob

loosing of H is oxidation

reduction : loosing O is reduction

gaining electrons is redution

decrerasing oxidation state is reduction

gaining H is reduction

substance which can oxidize act as reducing agent

substance which can reduce can act as oxidizing agent

for example

Zn(s) + CuSO4 -----------> ZnSO4 + Cu

An is oxidized from 0 to +2

Cu reduced from +2 to 0

in above reaction Zn involves in oxidation so it can act as reducing agent which makes Cu toreduce.

Cu involves reduction so it can act as oxidizing agent which makes Zn to oxidize
