Molybdenum fluoride has a ccp array of fluoride ions with 1/6 of
the octahedral holes filled with Mo ions. What is the chemical
formula? What is the oxidation state of Mo?
MoF6. Mo = +6
Please explain
In an octahedral geometry, 6 corners will be there around a central atom. But 1/6 of it is filled with Mo atom. So (1/6) x 6 = 1 atom of molybdenum will be there. The remaining fluorine atom will occupied at 6 positions of octahedral and Mo will be at the centre of cube.
So the chemical formula will be MoF6. The oxidation state-of-the-art fluorine atom is - 1,because it contains 7 valance electrons, so it will accept one electron to become stable. So the oxidation state of Mo will be +6 to neutralise 6 F- ions.
