Write the names of the following salts, using the rules discussed above. When using Roman Numerals, don't leave any space between the metal name and the (numeral), but do leave a space before the name of the non-metal.

ex.

tin(II) phosphate

1. Mn(CN)4
2. Zn(C2H3O2)2

3. Co2(CO3)3

And formulas for the compounds formed by the following pairs of chemical species

4. H+ and Br- (in aqueous solution)

5. Li+ and NO3-

6. Ba2+ and CO32-

7. Ba2+ and ClO2-

8. Sn2+ and PO43-

9. Fe3+ and C2H3O2-

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Lets name according to the rule :

1) Mn(CN)4 : Here there is -1 charge on CN and there are 4 such CN to total charge = -4

to neutralize -4 metal should have +4 charege or oxidation state of the metal is +4

Magnesium(IV) cynide

2) Zn(C2H3O2)2 Here CH3COO- is anion and two anions has -2 charge and so Zn has +2 oxidation state

Zinc(II) acetate

3) Co2(CO3)3

Here CO3 2- is anion and three such anion has -6 charge

two metal ions shold have +6 charge together and so metals oxidation state is +3

Cobalt(III) corbonate

Question 2)

H+ (aq) + Br(aq) -- > HBr(aq) so formula is HBr (aq)

2) Li+ + NO3- --> LiNO3 ; formula is LiNO3

3) Ba2+ + CO3 2- ---> BaCO3    formula is BaCO3

4) Ba2+ + ClO2 - -- > BaClO2   formula is BaClO2

5) Sn2+ + PO4 3- ----> Sn3(PO4)2 formula is Sn3(PO4)2

6) Fe3+ + C2H3O2- -- > Fe2(C2H3O2)3      Formula is Fe2(C2H3O2)3
