Hydrogen gas can be used in a chemical reaction to produce electricity. This type of electric generator is called a fuel cell and it may replace gasoline engines in cares in the next few years. The hydrogen gas used in fuel cells must be generated by chemical reactions. One method used to generate hydrogen gas is to pass an electric current through water. The electricity used to split the water molecules could come from renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power.

the reaction is water --> hydrogen + oxygen write a balanced chemical equation, and determine the number of moles of water that would be present in 1000 grams of water, and calculate the number of grams of hydrogen gas that would be liberated by the reaction. Also classifty the type of reaction. (Show ALL work).

Answer #1

Balanced chemical equation

2H2O O2  + 2H2

molar mass of water = 18.01528 gm/mole that mean 1 mole of water = 18.01528 gm

then 1000 gm of water = 1000/18.01528 = 55.5 mole of water

According to reaction 2 mole of water produce 2 mole of H2 then 55.5 mole of water produce 55.5 mole of H2

molar mass of H2 = 2.01 gm/mole that mean 1 mole of H2 = 2.01 gm

then 55.5 mole of H2 = 55.5 2.01 = 111.555 gm

111.555 gm of H2 produced from 1000 gm of water

it is deconpossition of water.
