What is the total molar concentration of all the ions in 0.0400 M solutions of the following salts in water? units ( M ions)

0.0400  M KCl

0.0400  M CuSO4

0.0400 M CaCl2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1)

KCl has 2 ions 1 K+ and 1 Cl-

So,

[K+] = [KCl] = 0.0400 M

[Cl-] = [KCl] = 0.0400 M

total concentration of ions = 0.0400 + 0.0400

= 0.0800 M

Answer: 0.0800 M

2)

CuSO4 has 2 ions 1 Cu2+ and 1 SO42-

So,

[Cu2 +] = [CuSO4] = 0.0400 M

[SO42-] = [CuSO4] = 0.0400 M

total concentration of ions = 0.0400 + 0.0400

= 0.0800 M

Answer: 0.0800 M

3)

CaCl2 has 3 ions 1 Ca2+ and 2 Cl-

So,

[Ca2+] = [CaCl2] = 0.0400 M

[Cl-] = 2*[CaCl2] = 2*0.0400 M = 0.0800 M

total concentration of ions = 0.0400 + 0.0800

= 0.1200 M

Answer: 0.1200 M
