So I know that aspirin is soluble in ethyl acetate when it is heated over a steam bath, but is It soluble when at room temperature?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Like dissolves like is the basic principal that governs the solubility of given substance in the gien solvent.

Aspirin is phenolic ester and also containing a carboxylic functional group (Structure shown here).

At higher temperature (steam bath temperature) aspirin molecule will be much polar due to ionization of -COOH group into -COO- and hence aspirin willbe soluble in ethyl acetate.

At room temperature though ionization of -COOH group in aaspirin is not significant still it will be partially soluble in ethyl actate through ease of H-bonding.

I know that 1:4 acetate; hexane eluting solvent is nonpolar. So what about the 1:2 acetate; hexane eluting solvent? Is it polar or non polar? When I used 1:4 acetate; hexane eluting solvent, I got that the starting material was more polar from the product because it has a smaller Rf value? If the eluting solvent changed from 1:4 acetate; hexane to 1:2 acetate; hexane, would the Rf values get larger? smaller? same? Explain why please

When using Tylenol for fever reduction, you know the following is NOT true: A. Acetaminophen will reduce the fever 1 to 2 degrees Celsius within two hours of administration. B. Acetaminophen is chosen over aspirin since Reye’s syndrome is linked to aspirin use. C. Acetaminophen does lower the temperature to normal unless the temperature is low-grade. D. Acetaminophen has a longer duration of action then ibuprofen.

An 890-g iron block is heated to 370 ∘C and placed in an insulated container (of negligible heat capacity) containing 35.0 g of water at 20.0 ∘C. What is the equilibrium temperature of this system? The average specific heat of iron over this temperature range is 560 J/(kg⋅K). Answer in ∘C. I have already tried 109 ∘C and 110 ∘C, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. :(

Preparation of acetyl salicyclic acid (Aspirin) post-lab questions 1.) The FeCl3 test you performed on salicylic acid, crude aspirin, and the purified aspirin gave different colors. Comment on the results you obtained in each of these tests in terms of colors and the functional groups present and what does that indicate about the purity of your purified aspirin? I got a dark purple color for saliclyc acid tube. "dark yellow" for crude aspirin tube, "llighter yellow" color for aspirin tube...

When ACE, ASP and CAF were analyzed by TLC using 2:9:9 mixture of t-butyl alcohol, 4-methyl-2-pentanone and ethyl acetate respectively the following Rf values were obtained: ACE (0.51), ASP (0.15) and CAF (0.35). These results are not the same ones obtained when using 2% acetic acid and 98% ethyl acetate as the mobile phase? Explain why were the results different for our case (TLC shown) particularly for caffeine. I know that the 2%/98% mobile phase is mostly nonpolar, so asprin...

10. Air is to be heated by passing it over a bank of 2.8-m-long tubes inside which steam is condensing at 90ºC. Air approaches the tube bank in the normal direction at 20ºC and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 5.2 m/s. The outer diameter of the tubes is 1.6 cm, and the tubes are arranged staggered with longitudinal and transverse pitches of SL = ST= 4 cm. There are 30 rows in the flow direction with 10 tubes...

I have posted the procedure of the lab below. Please tell me what the theoretical yield is for aspirin based on this procedure and explain how you got it. I am not sure I am doing this right. SYNTHESIS OF ASPIRIN Procedure: Start heating a water bath in your 250 mL beaker by filling it with ~150 mL of tap water. Carefully weigh out 1.0 gram of salicylic acid. Transfer to a 50 mL Erlenmeyer flask. In the fume hood,...

In chemical engineering thermodynamics, I don't know when i use SRK/RK/Lee Kesler or z=z0+w*z1 equation. If the problem assume high pressure situatioin, could i only use z=z0+w*z1 equation? For example <Five mol of calcium carbide are combined with 10 mol of water in a closed, rigid, high-pressure vessel of 1800 cm3 internal empty volume. Acetylene gas is produced by the reaction: The vessel contains packing with a porosity of 40% to prevent explosive decomposition of the acetylene. Initial conditions are...
