Propylene glycol Methyl Ether
(PGME) is a colourless liquid and it
smells like ether.
Its chemical structure is given below -
Like water it gets soluble in various solutes and because of this it is a good industrial solvent. It gets soluble in water too unlike many other ether having low soubility in water.
Being a good industrial solvent it has many uses in pesticides, inks and dyes, laundry products etc.
Being used in pesticides it is degrading the soil quality and polluting the water also.
Industrial wastes at some places or countries are directly expelled in sewage water which is polluting the water. It is very difficult to searate out PGME from the water as it is soluble in water unlike other ethers.
