He was the first to classify correctly interpret fossils as being from animals that lived in a previous age. He have classified some of the fossils as remains of sea shells. He found various petrified sea shells from mountains nearby. He interpreted these to be fossils from different era. He is also considered as the father of body fossils and ichnology.

2. Hippopotamus

According to recent studies with phylogeny tree and molecular data, the whales are more related to artiodactyls group. These are group of animals which have hoofs. The whales and hippos have originated from a common ancestor around 50 million years ago. They show some similarities like no hairs in the body and also no sweat glands.
