why are rh-negative fetuses not at risk for hemolytic disease
Hemolytic disease in newborns (HDN) is otherwise called Erythroblastosis fetalis and it means. This condition occurs when there is an incompatability between the blood types of a mother and baby.
If an rh negative mother has a baby with rh positive father and by chance if the baby's blood type is rh positive, then immune system of the mother sees the baby's rh positive blood cells as "foreign" and fight to breakdown the blood cells.
By chance if the baby has rh negative blood type, there would be no scope of mother's immune system fighting with the baby's blood cells because they are of same type and " not foreign". This is why, rh negative fetuses are not at the risk for hemolytic disease.
