How does migration affect the genetic similarity of populations? Why?

How does migration affect the genetic similarity of populations? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Migration or gene flow is the transfer of alleles from the gene pool of one population to the gene pool of another population. The diverging communities normally have different allelic frequencies. Migration between two populations helps to maintain similarities between the species. By this way, it can prevent the speciation. We can also say that migration can help to maintain genetic diversity in a population, and it decreases the variation between two populations. Migration between divergent habitats may either swamp or accelerate local adaptation depending on the gene flow-selection balance.
