If multiple colonies are seen on your blood agar after the incubation and all of them exhibit a-hemolysis, are they all members of the same species? Why or why not?
If all colonies are exhibiting alpha hemolysis, then they are not the members of the same species because the blood agar acts as a differential medium because it is used to differentiate pathogenic bacteria based on the effect and intensity of bacterial enzymes known as hemolysins which lyse red blood cells.
Alpha hemolysis is caused by hydrogen peroxide produced by the bacterium, oxidizing hemoglobin to methemoglobin.
These species may be streptococcus pneumoniae or streptococcus viridans or other oral streptococci species.
