Question

What is the experimental evidence that cells are the smallest unit of life.

What is the experimental evidence that cells are the smallest unit of life.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A cell can be termed as cytoplasm surrounded by a cellular membrane. Cells are known as the smallest unit of life, based on the fact that the features of a living organism can also be performed by an individual cell. The basic signs of life are 1)response to external and internal stimuli 2) reproduction 3) utilization of energy 4) growth. A cell can perform these basic signs of life by itself.

When separated from an organism, cells can continue to live on, produce new cells, utilize energy when they are kept in favourable environments. Also, many prokaryotic cells such as bacteria, archaea and many unicellular eukaryotic organisms such as Amoeba, Paramecium are capable of performing the basic signs of life.

Therefore, we can conclude that cells are the smallest units which are capable of living independently. Hence, cells are the smallest units of life.

The basic unit of life is the cell, and now in a modern laboratory even mammalian cells can be easily cultured in a test tube or a flask. In this unit you have learned about the biomolecules of life such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids which come together to allow cells to form and function. You are required to design a cell culture medium for maintaining mammalian cells, what are your key considerations? (hint: you need to describe...

Describe the experimental evidence and reasoning that led 19th century physicists to conclude that light has wavelike properties. In doing this, you should discuss at least one semal experiment, and explain what was known about the properties of light before the experiment, what key piece of evidence from this experiment changed physicists' understanding of light , and describe the new understanding of the physical nature of light that developed as result of this experiment.

Retinal ganglion cells located at the center of vision in the fovea have the smallest receptive fields in those located in the visual periphery have the largest receptive fields. The large receptive field size of neurons in the visual periphery explains the poor spatial resolution of our vision outside the point of fixation. why is true?
