Greater Sage grouse males are chicken-like bird. They have spiky tail which blends in with the surrounding area. The males greater sage grouse males are bigger than females and they become more colorful when they are about to mate. During mating, males come together to perform in a dance like competetion to impress the females. The females choose the males which are the most dominant among the rest.The outer tail feathers of Greater Sage grouse males are white, mostly seen during a flight.

Greater-prairie chicken males on the other hand have their tail terminates with a very dark colored band as opposed to the Greater Sage grouse males. They have their long feathers on the side of their necks also calleed pinnae which is often used in breeding displays as they are raised upward.
