what is one horizontal gene transfer mechanism that if used in a genetics experiment would involve many screenings of lots of cells to find successful recombinants that form visible colonies. Explain why you would need to do that many times.

Answer #1

Horizontal gene transfer is the transfer of foreign gene from one species to another or from same species by mean other than parent to offspring. After transfer cells should be screened for success of transfer. For this genes are transferred by recombinant DNA technology using vector or Direct DNA transfer. Screening may be using marker gene like antibiotic resistant gene or using complimentation test like lacZ alpha blue white screening. By these screenings recombinant ls can be selected.

Besides the method used by V. cholerae, other types of gene transfer exist. One important type is transduction, which can be generalized or specialized. Choose whether the following examples illustrate generalized transduction, specialized transduction, neither or both. a. Transduced DNA is integrated into the host as part of a prophage b. it is accomplished by transducing particles c. only specifc regions of DNA may be transduced d. A relatively low percentage of cells exposed undergo transduction e. transduction must involve...

They created clay models of snakes (both striped and melanistic) and looked to see how many of the models were attacked...

For a Magnetic field Mapping and Electromagnetic Induction experiment, how would one explain the following: - Why do you see a sudden deflection while you insert and remove a bar magnet - Explain why there is no deflection when you hold a bar magnet stationary - Explain why there was a defelection when you used a current carrying wire, instead of a magnet

Sorg suggests with regards to susceptible cells, “What doesn’t kill the cells will perhaps not make them stronger, but certainly gives them time to pick up resistance genes from their environment” (Sorg et al., 2016). What genetic exchange mechanism is he suggesting here? We see Staphylococci bacteria, which have been labelled with a green...

You have exposed some algae to a high-salinity environment and used high-throughput sequencing to measure gene expression levels. You have a list of 50 genes that are known to be involved in helping cells respond to high salinity and want to know whether more of those genes show a change in their expression (i.e., are either up-regulated or down-regulated). To do so, you can compare the observed number of up-regulated genes from that list to the number that might be...

You design an experiment to test the effects of pesticides on size of radishes. You expect pesticides to have negative impacts on growth. You have been provided with 200 radish seeds and 40 growth pots. You have two treatment groups (P = pesticides, NP = no pesticides). summaries the following in your own words : 5. Horizontal Integration Horizontal integration is the range of product and service segments that a firm serves within its market. A company who wants to expand its horizontal scope has an opportunity to do that through mergers and acquisitions. A merger is combining two or more companies into a single corporate entity, with the newly created company often taking on a new name. An acquisition is a combination in which one company,...

Simple Dominance with 2 genes A gene in cats causes them to be black (dominant) or brown (recessive). A second gene causes cats to be agouti (have stripes on their hairs) or non-agouti (solid colored hairs). If you did a dihybrid cross between two black haired agouti cats, what fraction of the offspring would be expected to have each phenotype? If a dihybrid black agouti cat mated with a brown cat that was heterozygous for the agouti gene, what fraction...

Lab 5 Queries with Multiple Tables In this lab, we do queries more than one table. SQL provides two different techniques for querying data from multiple tables: • The SQL subquery • The SQL join As you will learn, although both work with multiple tables, they are used for slightly different purposes. We used WMCRM database which is what we created in Lab 4. Here is the summary of the database schema (where schema is used in its meaning of...
