Due to ______________, water takes longer to go from a liquid to a gas if NaCL (a solute) is added.

Select one:

the non-polar covalent bonds

the heat of fusion

the surface tension

the cohesion

colligative properties

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Due to colligative properties, water takes longer time to go from a liquid to a gas if NaCl (a solute is added).

With addition of NaCl the concentration of ions in the water gets increase results in changing the colligative properties of the solution. As a result boiling point of water also gets increased thereby it taking longer time from a liquid to a gas with addition of NaCl salt.

Question about mixed solvents for recrystallization. I am having a hard time conceptualizing how a mixed solvent would work in a scenario where P and O nitronitroacetanilide are recrystallized with a small amount of hot Ethanol followed by a larger volume of water. From the structure of the molecules I assumed that the Para form of nitroacetanilide is more polar than the Ortho form. Second, I know that water>ethanol for polarity. Finally, I know that water and ethanol can hydrogen...

A water drop slung onto a skillet with a temperature between 100°C and 200°C will remain a liquid for about 1 second. However, if the skillet is much hotter the drop can last several minutes. This is due to the Leidenfrost Effect, named after an early investigator (circa 1756). The longer lifetime is due to the support of a thin layer of air and water vapor that separates the drop from the metal (by a distance L, as shown in...
