A bacterial cell has been tagged by antibodies and is destined to undergo phagocytosis. Discuss the process of phagocytosis and the steps involved. Make sure to discuss in your answer lysosomes, digestion and phagolysosomes.
The process of phagocytosis occurs when a cell binds to bacteria
or viruses that are foreign to body. It destroys by engulfing on
the cell surface and draws the bacteria and destroy it.
Steps of phagocytosis:
1. The plasma membrane which is outer membrane of cell extends
around the bacterial cell and engulf it.
2. Bacteria is placed into a phagosome which is lysosomes
containing vesicle.
3. Cytoplasm of cell contains lysosomes organelles that fuses with
the phagosome and forms phagolysosome.
4. The hydrolytic enzymes of the lysosomes involves the digestion
of the molecules of bacteria and thus destroy the bacteria.
5. The soluble products of digestion will be absorbed by cytoplasm
of the phagocyte.
6. Undigested materials will be released by exocytosis.
