Dermis consists of two layers from
superficial to deep as described below:
- Papillary layer:
This is the superficial layer closer to the epidermis. It is made
up of thin, areolar connective tissue with dermal papillae
protruding through the epidermis. These dermal papillae are
responsible for ridges in the epidermis that leaves
fingerprint.
- Reticular layer:
Reticular layer lies below the papillary layer and makes up most of
the dermis. It consists of thick, dense, irregular connective
tissue.
