QUESTION 61

  1. The RQ for fat is:

    A.

    0.70

    B.

    0.82

    C.

    1.00

    D.

    0.28

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Correct answer is Option A - 0.7

Reason

Respiratory Quotient(RQ) is the ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide releaswd to the volume of Oxygen Consumed per unit time

Respiratory Quotient = Volume of CO2 released per unit time/Volume of O2 consumed per unit time.

If

RQ < 1 ----> Aerobic respiration

RQ =1 -----> Aerobic reapiration

RQ> 1 -----> Anerobic respiration

RQ for the carbohydrate is 1

because

c6H12O6. +6O2 -------> 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP( cellular respiration)

RQ = 6CO2/6O2 =1

RQ for the Fat is 0.7 because,

for example consider the oxidation of Oleic acid(C18H34O2)

2 C18H34O2 + 51O2 --------> 36CO2. + 34 H20

Respiratory quotient = 36 CO2 / 51 O2 = 0.7

Like wise the RQ for the protein is 0.8.
