Explain why cholesterol increases in female post menopause.
Menopause is associated with a progressive increase in total cholesterol, with, in particular, an increase in low-density lipoprotein, (LDL) prior to menopause women produce sufficient amount of hormone estrogen which is an important hormone that regulates cholesterol, but once women attain menopause the levels of estrogen drops, which results in increase in choesterol.
Estrogen acts on the liver to cause an overall reduction in the total amount of cholesterol in the body, increases the amount of HDLand decreases the amount of bad cholesterol LDL
