Generally, formalin is used to preserve the piece of living tissue in the pathology lab.
Formalin is a solution of formaldehyde in water. It preserves proteins and cellular organelles in a stepwise process. It penetrates tissues quickly then binds to lysine, tyrosine, asparagine, tryptophan, histidine, arginine, cysteine, and glutamine in all of the proteins present in a specimen.
Formalin also prevents any shrinking or swelling and distorting or dissolving of cellular constituents. It prevent putrefaction by bacteria and prevent autolysis.
