Nissl bodies are responsible for the gray color of the gray matter, regions in the CNS that are highly enriched in cell bodies. Can you hypothesize why Nissl bodies exist in neurons and not in other cells?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The CNS has arranged called gray matter and white matter. Gray matter contains the cell bodies of nervous and supporting cells as well as unmyelinated dendrites. Nissl bodies exist in neuron and not in others cell because nissl bodies are found only soma and dendrites of a neuron and do not appear in the axon the protein they create the bodies is made up of Rna, protein, lipids and acid polysaccharides. It also essential to the well being of a neuron a decrease in the number of nissl bodies in the neuron indicates neural degeneration.

answer questions 1-5 with a brief explanation. Henry is interested in a study that shows a rat having a slower than normal reactions due to a lack in glial cells that maintain an axons myelin sheath, which is key in the rate of action potential down that axon. What cells are deficient in this rat if the glial cell was part of the peripheral nervous system? Schwann cells Oligodendrocytes Microglia Astrocytes The space between the arachnoid matter and the dura...

Your friend is studying mouse fur color and has isolated the GPCR responsible for determining its color, as well as the extracellular signal that activated the receptor. She finds that, on addition of the signal to pigment cells (cells that produce the pigment determining fur color), cAMP levels rise in the cell. She starts a biotech company, and the company isolates more components of the signmaling pathway responsible fo fur color. Using transgenic mouse technology, the company genetically engineers mice...

Part A: The MC1R (melanocortin 1 receptor) gene is responsible for normal pigmentation of skin in humans and controls which kind of melanin is made by skin cells, eumelanin and/or pheomelanin. Melanin serves as a cover for the cells so harmful UV rays cannot reach the nucleus and cause mutation, but also protects folate, a type of B vitamin essential in growth and metabolism. However, there are two sides to this story: exposure to sunlight is required to convert calcium...
