Questions - Little’s Formula

A GP practice receives on average 90 patients per day (opening hours between 9 am and 12 pm and 1 pm and 6 pm). During peak times (10 am – 12 pm and 2 pm – 5 pm), the GP practice receives around 60 patients in total, and 9 patients can be found in the GP practice (on average) at a given point in time. At non-peak times, the GP practice receives 30 patients in total, and 6 patients can be found in the GP practice (on average) at a given point in time. Assumption: a lunch break is hold from 12 pm to 1pm where the practice is closed.

Please answer the following questions in the BELOW

  • What is the average work in progress (WIP) during peak times? (1 mark)
  • What are the peak hours? (1 mark)
  • What is the arrival rate during peak hours?
  • What is the average time that a patient spends in the GP practice during peak times?
  • What is the average work in progress (WIP) during non-peak times? (1 mark)
  • What are the non-peak hours? (1 mark)
  • What is the arrival rate during non-peak hours?
  • What is the average time that a patient spends in the GP practice during non-peak times?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

What is the average work in progress (WIP) during peak times? 60 patients

What are the peak hours? 10 am - 12 pm and 2 pm - 5 pm

What is the arrival rate during peak hours? 9 patients

What is the average time that a patient spends in the GP practice during peak times? 33.33 minutes (total peak hours is 5hrs with 9 patients in the GP at any given time of peak times so: 5hrs/9patients = 33.33 mins.)

What is the average work in progress (WIP) during non-peak times? 30 patients

What are the non-peak hours? 9 am - 10 am and 5 pm - 6 pm

What is the arrival rate during non-peak hours? 6 patients

What is the average time that a patient spends in the GP practice during non-peak times? 2hrs/6patients = 20 minutes

Every day, patients arrive at the dentist’s office. If the Poisson distribution were applied to this process: a.) What would be an appropriate random variable? What would be the exponential-distribution counterpart to the random variable? b.)If the random discrete variable is Poisson distributed with λ = 10 patients per hour, and the corresponding exponential distribution has x = minutes until the next arrival, identify the mean of x and determine the following: 1. The hematology lab manager has been receiving complaints that the turnaround time for blood tests is too long. Data from the past month show that the arrival rate of blood samples to one technician in the lab is five per hour and the service rate is six per hour. To answer the following questions, use queuing theory and assume that both rates are distributed exponentially and that the lab is at a steady state. 6. What is the average time...

An insurance company has one adjuster in the branch office. People with claims against the company are found to arrive in a Poisson fashion during an 8 to 5 workday. Determine the hourly service and arrival rates using an 8-hour workday. The amount of time that the adjuster spends with a claimant is exponentially distributed. Claimants are processed in the order of their arrival. You are the manager of this branch and you wanted to investigate service provided by your...
