Why is intensive farming also known as factory farming in America?

It refers to places like big barns where chickens or pigs or cattle are kept in small pens hardly able to move about in some cases and they never go outside., they are fed on concentrated food made from high protein ingredients with extra vitamins and minerals added in. The reason being that more production can be forced from an animal that is confined and doesn't waste energy or time wandering about looking for food and it also makes it easier for the farmer if the animals are all together and easy to control , so it is just like a factory .
