Both of these cameras have great reviews. I'm really getting into photography and I wanted an slr camera but the slr only has .1 more MP than the powershot. Is there really a major difference between the two because the slr is a lot more expensive than the small powershot.

There is a major difference, actually there are several.

The sensor is larger. That means the mp don't have to be so tiny and squeezed into that tiny space so... better quality.

An slr has far better data processing than a point and shoot so the information gathered by the sensor reaches the memory card at a much higher quality... better quality.

The slr has interchangeable lenses of much higher quality... higher quality.

Trust me, a 6mp slr will out shoot a 12mp point and shoot all day long.
