If the flatware is marked "ster", "sterling" or ".925" it is solid sterling silver, which is an alloy of at least 92.5% pure silver mixed with up to 7.5% of another metal. Silver plated flatware is usually a cheap base metal (such as brass) electroplated with a very thin coating of either pure or sterling silver.
