On One Hand: Alcoholism as an AddictionAlcoholism is a disease that is considered an addiction. Those who are considered alcoholics are defined by their need to drink and inability to stop. They crave alcohol and in most cases they must utilize support groups to overcome their addiction. On the Other: Genetic DispositionStudies have shown that those with parents who are alcoholics are more likely to succumb to the disease if they choose to drink, WebMD reports. Besides genetics, chronic alcoholism has many other factors that will affect whether someone is going to become alcohol dependent.Bottom LineAlcohol abuse is an addiction and one of the many causes for the addiction is genetics. There are several other factors that contribute to the progression of the disease but genetics is a known link that enables the addiction.
